Abstract
Among Chinese intellectual history, there were four scholastic lines of Shijing (Book of Odes) commentaries in the Han times: Lu, Qi, Han, and Mao. Among them only Mao's commentary survives. Wang Chong's Lunheng was written at the beginning of the Eastern Han when all the four scholastic lines, the Lu, Qi, Han and Mao, were occupying or had occupied the official position. This paper is a study of selected citations of the Shijing found in the Lunheng. They are compared with Shijing-related writings from the Han period. The nature of former scholars' research on Lunheng's Shijing scholastic lines will be discussed. Furthermore, the method to analyse the scholastic lines of the Shijing will be introduced.
