Abstract

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder affecting about 0.1-0.2% of the population, with a higher prevalence among the elderly [1]. As the disease progresses, its motor symptoms worsen, significantly impairing patients' self-care abilities and quality of life. Due to the lack of definitive early-stage diagnosis and effective treatments to slow neurodegeneration, developing preventive measures is essential to alleviate the social and economic burdens associated with PD. Emerging evidence suggests that dietary components, such as probiotics, can modulate the gut-brain axis to potentially prevent PD development. Previous research has highlighted esculetin, a natural coumarin, for its neuroprotective properties in both in vitro and in vivo studies [2]. Esculetin has also shown antimicrobial effects on gut pathogens [3]. This study investigates the efficacy of a novel combination therapy involving esculetin and probiotics in preventing PD development in a 1‐methyl‐4‐phenyl‐1,2,3,6‐tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced PD mouse model. Results indicate that this combination therapy positively impacts behavioral outcomes in MPTP-induced PD mice, suggesting that the synergistic use of esculetin and probiotics could be a promising approach in managing PD. This research sheds light on potential strategies to address PD and offers hope for improving the lives of those affected by this debilitating condition.
