Abstract

Based on lecture notes given to first-year undergraduates, this textbook provides an elementary introduction to probability and its applications. It starts with basic concepts and gradually build up the general theory. The focus is on how probability models can be used to model real life situations. The only prerequisite is some elementary set theory and calculus. The treatment is kept as simple as possible with no attempt to full generality. Numerous worked examples and exercises are provided to test understanding. It is hoped that this book offers a useful guide for building the foundation needed for more advanced studies in probability and statistics... In preparing this second edition, in addition to correcting errors in the first edition, we have also include a new chapter on sampling and sampling distributions... (preface)
